Cotswold District Council has launched a public consultation as part of a formal polling station/district review. Residents, councillors and parish/town councils are being asked to give their views on the current arrangements for polling stations and polling districts, and on some possible changes.
Changes proposed include:
· Investigating potential alternative polling stations;
· Assessing options to combine local polling stations in certain areas.
The consultation deadline is Friday 6 December.
All submissions received will be reviewed and considered before final recommendations are submitted to the Council on Wednesday 22 January 2020. If agreed, any amendments will come into effect for the Police and Crime Commissioner Election on 7 May 2020.
Nigel Adams, the Council’s Returning Officer, commented: “We want to make the voting process as accessible as possible for all, and part of this is to ensure that polling stations are conveniently located, ideally within walking distance for the majority of electors in our urban areas and with parking facilities.
“We also want to seek to ensure that all polling stations have access facilities for disabled electors, including wheelchair users – despite the challenges that some of our more traditional venues present. We would therefore particularly welcome comments from any person or body with expertise in access for persons with any type of disability.”

More money for the museum
Cirencester’s Corinium Museum is to get an extra £135,000 funding from Cotswold District Council to finance some unforeseen work to the ground below the shop area.
Councillors agreed to increase their financial contribution to the museum’s ‘Stone Age to Corinium Project’ after it was found that the ground and foundations below the shop area were in poor condition and needed underpinning which would be an extra cost in the work being carried out.
Councillor Jenny Forde said: “Most of us have been living in this area long enough to know how common this situation is when working with old buildings and despite all efforts, this truly was unforeseen.
“We’re taking the long term view that this 1.7million project will ultimately benefit everyone and will secure the future of our beloved and important Museum.”

To raise further funds for the ‘Stone Age to Corinium Project’ the museum wants to fill the museum walls with Corinium Creatures. For a minimum donation you can buy a creature and have it printed with a name of your choice that will be displayed on the museum walls for one year.

This half-term, WALLY, the world’s favourite children’s book character – wearing a red-and-white striped shirt and black-rimmed specs – will be travelling the country, appearing in museums, including a visit to Corinium Museum in Cirencester. Families will be able to join the search for Wally at the museum as part of Where’s Wally? The Big Museum Hunt, organised by Walker Books and Kids in Museums, to celebrate the release of the new book, Where’s Wally? Double Trouble at the Museum.
Launching in time for October half-term, the promotion will run from 12 October until 3 November 2019. Each participating museum will create and promote their own Where’s Wally? search-and-find trail as part of this nationwide campaign, giving families the chance to receive an ‘I Found Wally!’ sticker at the end and to enter the Where’s Wally? and Kids in Museums grand prize draw competition.
Cllr Jenny Forde, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and public safety said, “Our Corinium Museum is always a wonderful place to take the kids at half-term and this is a fab way for kids to enjoy the museum searching for Wally! This week, 23rd – 29th September, marks Empty Homes Week 2019 and Cotswold District Council are working with national campaign charity ‘Empty Homes’ to highlight the 216,000 long term unoccupied houses in the UK.
In the Cotswolds there are currently 714 residences stood vacant and unused, 189 of which have been for over 2 years. It is estimated that such a property can cost the owner up to £10,000 per year in security, repairs, insurance and council tax.
There are currently 45 households that Cotswold District Council have accepted a homelessness duty to rehouse and an additional 26 households who are threatened with homelessness. This can be for a variety of reasons, ranging from relationship breakdowns, unaffordable rents, financial difficulties or landlords wishing to sell their properties to name just a few.
Empty homes are a waste of a valuable asset especially when over 1900 people are registered on our Homeseeker Plus waiting list, hundreds of whom have been awarded priority bandings. The local authority charges a 100% premium on council tax for any house left empty for more than 2 years. The Government has agreed to double the total cost from April 2019 on owners who refuse to address the issue.
The Council has the power to enforce Empty Dwelling Management Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders but we are keen to work with and support owners to bring their houses back to use.
Cllr Lisa Spivey, cabinet member for housing and homelessness said “Landlords and homeowners who have long term empty properties can make a big difference if they let their properties to those in need of housing in the district. The truth is if we could bring these empty houses into use, it would make a positive dent in the number of individuals and families currently on the housing register. It’s a scandal that so many homes are left vacant when there are people in desperate need in the district. The package of incentives to bring these homes back into use make it easy for property owners to start maximising their assets, so it’s win-win situation for all. I would encourage anyone who has an empty property to get in touch.”
